Lucas Jungmann wins the Photo Contest

We are pumped to announce and further introduce the winner, Lucas Jungmann, of the first ever Assiniboine Photo Contest. Check out the photo gallery to see the five winning photos. We received many excellent photos and it was a difficult task to pick just one winner. Thankyou to everyone for submitting your photos. Here is a conversation Sara Renner had with Lucas.

When were the photo's taken?
The series of photos were taken over the weekend of August 26-28th, 2011. Most were taken during dusk or dawn but a few were taken during mid day.

What kind of camera/exposure?
I shot all my frames with a Nikon D300s and a Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8  Lens.
A few of the exposures were done with a tripod to ensure that a stable photo could be achieved. The exposures vary between 1/5th of second to 1/1000th of a second. Two particular photos use a technique called high dynamic range (HDR) to achieve a full tonal range of color and brightness.

Where were you staying?
I enjoyed the comfort of the two different Naiset huts for the duration of the weekend. They were great  at providing simple access to trails warm fires for the cold morning air. My friend Mike Wing and I cooked our meals in warmth and luxury within the beautifully built new cook shelter.

Is it a self portrait on the nublet?
Unfortunately no.. After hiking down from the Nub I ask my hiking partner Mike Wing to snap that shot. I thought the humble contrast between a person relaxing would mix great with the magnificent mountains.

Did you have any adventures at Assiniboine?
Yes, indeed I did. Upon arriving and unpacking our gear Mike and I decided to go for a short walk to snap a few photos. We walked our way to the far end of Magog Lake. Mike joked about of hiking up the moraine in the direction of Lake Gloria.. I happily said, "let do it." Reluctantly Mike and I scrambled our way up to the top of a small plateau and enjoyed the view in the direction of Sunburst and Elizabeth lake. As we began to make our decent we ended up forcing ourselves onto a ridge that crossed over a 35+ foot drop. We were unable to go back and ended up having to free climb our way across the cliff into a snow drift and then scree our way down to the lake. Needless to say, I don't think Mike will be sarcastic around me again..

Was it your first trip to Assininboine?
In fact this is my second trip to Assiniboine. I had stayed in the Naiset cabins once before and it was during the cold winter months of 2003. The only two things I remember are lounging in my sleeping bag in our hut with the fire blazing; and the cold and utterly long ski out to Mount Shark the following morning.
