Do I need to reserve a campsite in advance?
Since April 10, 2018, reservations are required during peak season (June 26 – October 2) for all overnight stays in the core area of Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park – at Og Lake and Magog Lake campgrounds. Also as of March 2024, reservations are required for Porcupine Campground in the periphery of the Park.
Reservations for Og Lake and Magog Lake campgrounds can be made at 4 months in advance of an arrival date via www.BCParks.ca/reserve. Park periphery campgrounds and rustic cabins (Surprise Creek cabin/campground, Rock Lake Campground, Mitchell Meadows Campground, Mitchell River Cabin and Police Meadows Cabin) will remain available on a first-come, first-served basis, with no associated registration, reservation or camping fees.
Bring a copy of your online reservation with you for proof of payment as Park Custodians will be checking documentation.
Campgrounds are $10 per person, per night for adults, $5 for children aged six to fifteen and free for children under five. Reservations/Booking fees apply. Both Og Lake and Magog Lake Campgrounds are in very high demand. They are both full most nights in the summer season.
What if it is full when I get there?
Do not plan to camp in the park unless you have secured reservations for the Magog Lake or Og Lake campground in advance. There is no longer an overflow area.
If you have a reservation but cannot find an empty tent-pad, take your paper confirmation of your online reservation to the Park Custodian in the area, or the staff at Assiniboine Lodge. They will assist you.
Is there an overflow area?
There is no longer an overflow area at the Magog or Og Lake Campgrounds. Ensure you have a confirmed campground reservation before entering the park and bring a copy of your confirmation documents with you.
Is there a cooking shelter?
There is a cook shelter at the Magog Lake campground only. There is a large pavillion style cooking shelter and outdoor cooking tables. Please cook in designated cooking areas to help keep our impact to a minimum and keep wildlife away from tents.
Are there food storage lockers at the campgrounds?
Yes. There are food lockers at both Og and Magog campgrounds. Porcupine campground has lockers and/or bear poles.
Is there water nearby?
There is running water near the cooking shelter in the summer. In colder weather when the pipes are likely to freeze, the water is shut off but water can be collected from the creek. BC Parks recommends that all water be boiled before consumption.
Should I bring bear spray?
Yes. Think of it more as ‘animal deterrent’ as it can be used to discourage a bear or even a moose, from approaching you. Have it easily accessible (ie not in the bottom of your day pack) and know how to use it without causing harm to yourself or your companions. Bear spray is a last resort and should only be used if being directly threatened by wildlife.
Are campfires allowed?
No. No open fires allowed in Assiniboine Provincial Park. Bring a camp stove and fuel and know how to use it.
