The Building: Built in 2006 by BC Parks, the Wonder Lodge Cooking Shelter is a fully enclosed modern log cabin. It is used for communal cooking and provides a common area for Naiset Hut visitors. It is open during the Naiset Huts operational season and when there is a custodian at Assiniboine Lodge. Outside of the operational season, the cook shelter is locked and it is your responsibility to bring a cooking stove and fuel.
Cooking: 2 x three burner propane stoves are supplied. There are two indoor picnic tables with benches and a food preparation area. Pots/pans are provided. Dishes and utensils are NOT provided until further notice. Bring your own biodegradable dish soap and scrubbies. If you choose to use your own personal stove or visit outside the operational season, you must cook, store and refill your fuel canisters outside. There is no cooking allowed with personal stoves inside the Wonder Lodge Cooking Shelter or inside the Naiset Huts.
Heating: The Wonder Lodge Cooking Shelter is supplied and heated with propane.
Lighting: The Wonder Lodge Cooking Shelter has solar power lights that run on a timer. Propane lights are provided for additional light.
Food Storage: Animal proof non-refrigerated metal food storage boxes are located outside of the Wonder Lodge Cooking Shelter. There is one shared storage box assigned for each hut. Food and garbage must be stored in the storage boxes and not inside the Cooking Shelter. In the winter, food that you do not want to freeze can be stored inside the cooking shelter.
Summer Drinking Water: There is running water in the Wonder Lodge Cooking Shelter during the warmer summer months and an outdoor tap in front of the Cooking Shelter. In September, as the temperature becomes colder, the water may be shut off. Drinking water can be found in the stream between the Naiset Huts and the Park Headquarter cabin. BC Parks recommend that you boil or filter all drinking water.
Winter Drinking Water: There is no running water in the Wonder Lodge Cooking Shelter or outdoor water taps in the winter. At times, there is an open stream 50 meters from the Naiset Huts towards the BC Parks headquarters cabin. Be prepared to melt snow if the stream is inaccessible. BC Parks recommends boiling or filtering all drinking water.
Grey Water: You can drain grey water directly down the sink in the Wonder Lodge Cooking Shelter. Be sure that the strainer is in place under the drain. Do not allow any food scraps (including coffee grounds) to enter the ground sump. Periodically empty the strainer contents and pack the contents out in your garbage. In the summer, there is a grey water ground pit in front of Fleabane hut for personal washing and teeth brushing.
Garbage: Burn all paper garbage in the hut stoves and pack out all garbage. Do not leave any unused food behind even if it is non-perishable. It attracts rodents and people do not use it since they don’t know how old it is.
